A cafe in a restored Art Deco Lido complex at Macduff.  Macduff, UK

The Tarlair Pavilion Cafe is a restored Art Deco 1930s cafe as part of the Lido complex at Macduff.  Tarlair is a unique triple-pool structure comprising a paddling pool, a boating pool, a swimming pool, and a pavilion/tea-room. The wave-replenished pools were one of the first such Art Deco structures to be built. It has curved terraces surrounded by the cliffs that echo the curves of the pools, and it fits perfectly into a beautifully dramatic rocky bay on the shore of the town of Macduff.

The pools closed in 1995, and although worthy attempts have been made to maintain the structures, it could not halt the harm caused by waves and weather. However, things are very different.  The cafe is again  a vibrant asset to the community, and approval has just been awarded to start fundraising to restore the pools

A community group called ‘The Friends of Tarlair’ restored the cafe and workshop (available to book) and now, with a large group of volunteers, provides a wonderful relaxing venue to enjoy a cuppa with friends or a lunch with amazing views out to sea. Dolphins and other wildlife make regular appearances.  Currently, the inner pool is used by the model boat club with some historic boats on show.

The cafe is a perfect example of Art Deco architecture.  The cafe seats around 40 people, and you can even sit upstairs on the flat roof, where the views are even more stunning.  The terraces around the cliffs hug the cafe and lido complex, giving it a very special, ethereal feeling.  Picnics are encouraged, though do be careful of the pools with dogs and children.

Tarlair Cafe is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and on Sunday from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM.

The cafe serves lunch from 1130 to 1430 hrs, but NOT on Sundays; this is planned for the future.
